phone to the SP's SIM card. Once the cell phone is
locked to a specific operator, if one inserts a SIM card
from a different operator the phone will refuse to
accept it! The cell phone will however accept another
SIM card from the same operator.

Enhanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (AlgebraicCode Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced with about 5%

Half Rate will give you bad soundquality, which gives the serviceprovider the opportunity to have more calls on the network, and you might get a lower charge from them. - Will give you 30% longer talk-time.

Sim Clock Stop : *#746025625# apparently only works for 3 minuts.

NetMonitor information
GSM phones from Nokia have a special menu called Netmonitor (Operator Field Test Display) which gives access to more than 50 submenus (depending on model). Signalling displays, informatio n on serving cell and neighbours, Network parameters, Ciphering, hopping, DTX status and IMSI, Lights status control and batt. temperatur is just some a the functions found here.

There are three different modes:
- display mode
- execute mode
- help mode

Display mode is used etc. typing in 1 and just scrolling the menus. Help mode will be activated by holding down * for 2 sec. If you what to switch timers, lights etc. you need to use execute mode. Execute mode is of the one-shot type. You switch on / off and in some menus resets through the main menu: "Test:". Just type in the menu number you like to switch. Go back and retype to switch back. (only for on / off functions)

Netmonitor on Nokia can NOT be activated by any *# code alone.
However these 3 ways work:

1. With a special SIM card.
2. By de-soldering the eeprom with ATMEL AT 24C64 (serial 8kbyte eeprom). Read out data with eprommer (e.g.. GALEP 3 avail. at CONRAD Electronic, or ECLIPSE from Stag) and save data! Eg. Nokia 6150 at address 0430 (software-version 4.01) change hex 00 to ff 3. With a cable (M2BUS or FBUS) and the right software. [Software can be found on GSMinside.com' s software page and the cable can be found in the cable section]

Note that may need to take out the batt after activation of the Netmonitor to make the menu appear.

The last one would have to be a favourite or at least very useful
in particular situations. The CND blocking per call Number (*31#+phone number) is used for blocking calls from a particualr
number...say the number of your fanatically obessed ex-girlfriend
or maybe the number of a cuban cocaine dealer that you happen to owe money too.
For people who dont understand how to use it,
what you do is:
-Pick Up The Phones reciever or handset.
-Dial *31# then enter the phone number of the person who you dont want calling and yay....no more hassels.
(unless they ring from a different number or a payphone , then your
screwed.)
-Hang up the phone =P
Please note you have to pay extra for this service.

Interesting Numbers

FAST
FAST is a testing number for telstra field technicians.
its number is 1800 050 051.
to use FAST you will need a telstra employees PIN and ID number.
there were a few ways of bypassing the employee and pin bit using ***
(three asterixes, the asterixes still acts as wildcards in the phone world too.) To a phreak in australasia gaining access to FAST is better than gold.

MOBILE
How to send free SMS and SMSc

The following is a list of most the SMSC's (Short Message Service Centers) around the world. These can be used to send text messages for free.

All you need to do is change the service center number on your phone (under "message settings") to one of the networks below. Don't choose your own network as you will get charged for it.

There are just a few things to remember when trying this:

If you use a network outside of your country, you will need international call roaming enabled (speak to your service provider about this).

The network you are using may not be able to send to the network you are trying to send to. Therefore it may accept the message but can't send it.

If you use a network outside your own country you will need type the recipients phone number in international format for your country because it's being sent abroad.

For example we are in the UK and to send someone we know a message for free using a forein service center we would type in the ANDORRA message center into our phone and send it to +447788123456.

The networks are becoming wise to this and are barring you from using their SMSC if your not on their network. Therefore it could become time consuming to find one that works.

Remember though, when you find one that works, keep it to yourself because the less people know about it, the better.

TRACKING STOLEN MOBILES USING THE IMEI
This piece of info is handy if you dont want your mobile to be stolen
and if you would like to track it down in case it ever gets stolen.
Type *#06# on your mobile and it will display a 15 digit International
mobile equpiment identifier (IMEI) number. write this IMEI number down.
When ever a new SIM card is inserted into the mobile the IMEI gets
stored on to the SIM. Hence its possible to track down the mobile number given the IMEI.
